Fireworks Over the Harbor

Thu, 07/11/2019 - 18:44

The Clamshell Foundation’s Great Bonac Fireworks Show will be set off over Three Mile Harbor at 9 on Saturday.

Good spots to watch the show include the head of the harbor, Maidstone Park beach, Sammy’s Beach, Gann Road, or beaches on the west side of the harbor. Boaters head into the harbor early for a good viewing spot.

The rain date is Sunday.

All of Three Mile Harbor, including its inlet and tributaries, will be closed to shellfishing from sunrise on Saturday through Wednesday out of concern for public health because of increased boat traffic related to the show, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Division of Marine Resources announced Monday.

The D.E.C. reminded boaters to use pump-out facilities “to help protect New York’s waters.”

All of the normally certified shellfishing areas in Three Mile Harbor will be impacted, the D.E.C. said. The closure also applies to the entrance channel into the harbor.

Shellfish harvesting is expected to resume next Thursday. If the fireworks show is canceled or postponed beyond the weekend due to rain, the D.E.C. said it may reopen the area to shellfishing earlier than next Thursday.

Also on Saturday, the Shelter Island Chamber of Commerce will set off its 60th annual fireworks display at Crescent Beach around 9.
