The Shinnecock Nation advised residents of a possible active shooter on the nation's territory following a fatal shooting there Friday morning.
State police confirmed early Friday afternoon that a shooting was reported on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation at 5:35 a.m. Police found one victim, who was pronounced dead on arrival, with an apparent gunshot wound. The investigation is continuing and no arrests appear to have been made.
Meanwhile, the Council of Trustees emailed residents to be vigilant. "Please be advised that an active shooter may be on the loose on the territory. Considered armed and dangerous," said the email, which was sent around 11:30 a.m. Some community members are adhering to a lockdown status.
State police made no mention of an active shooter situation, but asked that anyone who may have witnessed the incident call state police in Farmingdale at 631-756-3300. All calls will remain confidential.
State police officers are on the nation's land, just west of Southampton Village, investigating the shooting, which reportedly took place inside a house. "Please allow them to do their job," the bulletin said.
The Nation posted a photograph of the wanted individual, who is not a member of the Shinnecock Nation, and his description, and asked that anyone who sees the man call state police or the Council of Trustees.
