Gloria J. Rousell
Gloria Joan Rousell of Montauk, a nurse for nearly four decades, died at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton on March 10 of congestive heart failure. She was 90.
Born on Jan. 14, 1923, in New York City to Anthony Wescott and the former Lela Pettir, she was raised in Corona and Jackson Heights, Queens, where she attended William Cullen Bryant High School. After her graduation from St. Catherine’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1952, she lived in New York City and attended St. John’s University, where she received a B.S. in Nursing in 1955.
Her career as a nurse took her to St. Catherine’s Hospital, Cornell Medical Center, New York University Hospital, and Cabrini Medical Center in New York, and finally Southampton Hospital. She retired in 1994.
She married Kenneth W. Rousell on May 3, 1960, and they moved to Montauk shortly after their marriage, raising a son and daughter there.
Mrs. Rousell loved to travel with friends and had been many places including Mexico, England, Ireland, France, Denmark, Bermuda, and Iceland. At home, she enjoyed needlepoint, as well as a good read or a crossword puzzle. She was a member of the American Nurses Association and of St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk and the AARP.
Mrs. Rousell is survived by her daughter, Gloria J. Rousell of Montauk, her son, Kenneth W. Rousell of East Quogue, and five grandchildren. Her husband died in 2004.
A funeral Mass was said on Saturday at St. Therese, followed by burial at Fort Hill Cemetery in Montauk. Memorial donations have been suggested to the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, P.O.
