Highway Roadwork Resumes

After a winter hiatus, a $13.8 million project to repave and repair 15 miles of Montauk Highway between East Hampton and Montauk is under way again.

The New York State Department of Transportation’s project, stretching between Buell Lane in East Hampton and South Etna Avenue in Montauk, started up again this week. In the fall, state contractors had repaved some of the worst sections between East Hampton and Amagansett, with the exception of both downtown areas. They are now working west to east on the remaining sections ane expect the project to be complete by May.

Lane shifts on shorter sections of the highway are being employed so that one direction of travel remains open to drivers during the work. Roadwork is being done during off-peak daytime hours, Monday through Friday, between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., when possible. The top layer of pavement is being removed and replaced with new asphalt and pavement markings, including more visible pedestrian crosswalks, the D.O.T. said.

At busy intersections and the downtown areas of East Hampton Village, Amagansett, and Montauk work will be done at night.

Aside from this bigger project, the D.O.T. is evaluating the most damaged sections of all state roads, including Route 114 in East Hampton, where potholes abound, particularly under the railroad trestle in East Hampton.
