‘Folkie Fest’ at LTV Studios

Tue, 01/21/2025 - 11:13
Robert Bruey, a North Fork singer-songwriter and guitarist, is one of five local artists set to perform in “Folkie Fest: East Meets West” at LTV Studios.

Given the warm reception for the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” the timing of “Folkie Fest: East Meets West” at LTV Studios in Wainscott is fortuitous. Billed as “an ongoing concert series with local acoustic artists,” the lineup for Sunday’s 2 p.m. show includes Claudia Jacobs, Lina Maxine, Jeffrey Bragman, Robert Bruey, and Bart Woelk.

Ms. Jacobs developed her performing and writing skills in Greenwich Village in the ‘80s, when the neighborhood had a folk revival, and was a regular at the Speakeasy, where she embraced the folk tradition.

Ms. Maxine, a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, teamed up with Dean Aladay, a guitarist from London, to shape their alternative sound rooted in rock and pop. Now based in Montauk, they have played in New York City and across Long Island, including Amagansett’s Stephen Talkhouse.

Mr. Bragman learned to play the guitar growing up in Wisconsin, and was drawn to the music of Phil Ochs, Willis Alan Ramsey, John Prine, and Bob Dylan. He later moved toward country rock and classic heartbreak ballads.

Based on the North Fork, Mr. Bruey is a singer, songwriter, and fingerstyle guitarist. Of his music, Michael Block wrote in Pulse Magazine, “Robert Bruey’s beautiful music is a prime example of the universal mojo that can be conjured when such bare essentials as voice, guitar and lyric are unified by a master songsmith.”

Elements of folk, country, pop, and blues inform the singing and songwriting of Mr. Woelk, reflecting his interests, observations, and grievances with life.

Tickets are $15. Refreshments will be available, with proceeds benefiting Long Island Cares. If any of the performers plans to go electric, nobody’s talking.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
