Open House at Nature Museum

The South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton has a lineup of family-friendly events for its fall open house on Saturday. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can get in free of charge and take advantage of activities including a nature walk, leaf rubbing, and seashell art. A workshop on Native American art is the only part that requires registration ahead of time at 631-537-9735 or sofo.org.

It’s Gingerbread Season

Looking ahead, Project Most’s annual all-ages gingerbread house decorating workshop and contest are planned for next weekend.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Most Holy Trinity School, there will be a group-decorating session where a $50 admission charge will get participants kits that include everything families need to create gingerbread masterpieces. Kids 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. For those wishing to take the kits home to work on, the cost is $35.

The houses can be taken home that day or left on site for the competition the next day. Those who took kits home can take them back next Thursday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The contest on Dec. 8 will include a community viewing event with seasonal refreshments in which people can vote for their favorite gingerbread house.

Full details, as well as a link to register, can be found at projectmost.org.

At the Children’s Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton, there will be gingerbread house decorating workshops on Dec. 7 and Dec. 14 from either 10 to 10:45 a.m. or 11:15 a.m. to noon. These usually sell out quickly, so advance sign-up is a good idea. The cost is $40, or $35 for members. Kits include houses already assembled and ready for decorating. Registration is through the website.

Adventures Onscreen

The family matinee this weekend at the Sag Harbor Cinema is the 2011 film “Hugo” (rated PG), in which a young orphan is charged with maintaining the clocks at the Paris train station where he lives. With a friend, he goes on an adventure to solve a mystery that has captivated him since his father’s death. Screenings happen tomorrow through Sunday. Tickets cost $18.50 for adults and $14.50 for children 12 and under (a discount is available for members and Southampton Town residents).

At the East Hampton Library, “Monsters Inc.” (2001, rated G) and “Monster University” (2013, rated G) will be screened on Saturday in the Young Adult room starting at 10 a.m.

Community Service and More

The East Hampton Library’s Teen Advisory Board meets Monday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Community service hours are awarded for students as they contribute to planning events and activities at the library. Another opportunity happens on Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 to 6:30, when Youth Connect, a mental health program for teens sponsored by Organizacion Latino Americana of Eastern Long Island, will be on hand to guide teens to make fresh audio and video content that serves their community.

Teens can also make their own sugar scrubs and roll-on fragrances using essential oils on Tuesday from 4 to 5 p.m. At the same time, for kids 7 to 10, there will be a STEM workshop involving “exploding snowmen.”

On Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., teens can stop by to decorate sugar cookies in celebration of National Cookie Day. From 4 to 5 p.m., kids 7 to 10 can make their own snow globes. Next Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m., children 3 to 6 can make their own flameless menorahs using upcycled materials.

The library requires advance sign-up for its events via its online calendar.

Decorating Extravaganza

Calling Sag Harbor-area teens in need of community service hours: The John Jermain Memorial Library needs help sprucing up the library for the winter holidays. A decorating session happens on Monday from 4 to 5 p.m.

The library also invites students in kindergarten through second grade to make their own holiday ornaments next Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m. Registration ahead of time is required via the library’s online calendar.

Minkie at CMEE

The Goat on a Boat Puppet Theater will bring its original Minkie the Monkey show to the Children’s Museum of the East End on Saturday at 1 p.m. The show is best for children 3 to 8 years old. The cost is $35 per person, which includes museum admission for the whole day. Members pay $10 for the show. Registration is at cmee.org.
