New Path Named for Zach Cohen

A multiuse path in the Buckskill Meadow Trunzo Preserve in Wainscott will be named to honor the late Lewis Zachary Cohen, a longtime member of East Hampton Town’s Nature Preserve Committee, during a ceremony on Monday at 11 a.m.

Mr. Cohen, a dedicated participant in the town government who was known as Zach, died last year. He was appointed to the Nature Preserve Committee in 2002 and served as its chairman from 2011 to 2020. In 2011, he challenged Supervisor Bill Wilkinson, losing by just 19 votes.

The .6-mile Lewis Zachary Cohen Memorial Multi-Use Path can accommodate uses including walking, jogging, and children’s bicycling, and is accessible to those with handicaps. Its creation is “primarily attributable to the hard work and dedication of Zachary Cohen,” according to a resolution passed by the town board on Tuesday.

“Zachary accomplished this, and many of his other efforts, by building teams and consensus, by revealing truths despite consequences, and by lending his expertise and common sense,” according to the resolution. He “championed many initiatives, investigations, attended countless town meetings, and continued to show his commitment to our town throughout his life in East Hampton.”

His “many good deeds and tireless effort to improve our town have left an indelible legacy of service to the community.”

Alayah Hewie, the owner of the Hamptons-based Jamaican patty company Rena’s Dream Patties, has organized a Container of Love Drop-Off Day to collect donations for Jamaica hurricane relief from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Green Thumb Organic Farm Stand in Water Mill.
