The East Hampton Town Police Department has announced that school crossing guard positions are available. “We have had some wonderful community members hold down these positions for many years, and all have retired recently. We are struggling to find candidates who can work the split shifts,” Chief Michael Sarlo wrote in an email this week.

The minimum requirement is the ability to read and speak English. Police note the position is ideal for someone semiretired, or who works another part-time job. “Civilian crossing guards for our schools are an important supplement to our department and help provide safety for our kids while freeing up our officers for other duties,” Chief Sarlo said.

Duties include regulating the directional flow of student, pedestrian, and vehicular traffic at an assigned intersection or school crosswalk, as well as reporting traffic incidents to police authorities for appropriate action. Guards are also expected to note anything unusual or suspicious and alert police in incidents that violate laws and ordinances.

At East Hampton High School, guards are being hired to work from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. and 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. Hours at the Springs and Montauk Schools run from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. and 2:15 to 2:45 p.m.

The Amagansett School needs guards for five time windows per day: 7:45 to 8:15 a.m., 8:45 to 9:15 a.m., 1:45 to 2:15 p.m., 2:45 to 3:15 p.m., and 3:45 to 4:15 p.m.
