‘Hysteria’ at Guild Hall
The Neo-Political Cowgirls will bring “Hysteria,” an immersive experience inspired by stories of female hysteria, to Guild Hall next Thursday at 8 p.m.
Hysteria was considered a medical disorder for centuries, and it was not uncommon for women thus diagnosed to be forced to enter insane asylums or to undergo surgical hysterectomy. The American Psychiatric Association did not drop the term until 1952.
“Hysteria” uses sound, music, light and darkness, dance, and frightening stories of women diagnosed with hysteria in a performance that surrounds the seated audience. According to Kate Mueth, the founder and artistic director of the company, the program is “an artistic venture into the landscape of fear, pain, and cruelty acted upon women . . . .”
The cast includes Vanessa Walters, Josh Gladstone, Trevor Vaughn, LaWanda Hopkins, Quinn Jackson, Amanda Nichols, Rebecca Edana, Susan Stout, and Colleen Edwards. Tickets are $25 in advance at npcowgirls.org or $30 at the door. The performance is for ages 15 and up.
Piano-Clarinet Duo
The Salon Series at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill will feature a concert by Misuzu Tanaka and Maksim Shtrykov, an acclaimed piano-clarinet duo who perform throughout the United States, tomorrow at 6 p.m.
The program will open with Felix Mendelssohn’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in E flat. Concert Fantasy, an arrangement for the two instruments by Donato Lovreglio based on themes from Verdi’s “La Traviata,” will follow. The program will conclude with Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 94, originally composed for flute by Prokofiev. The duo will play Mr. Shtrykov’s original arrangement of the piece for clarinet and piano.
A reception will follow the performance. Tickets are $25, $10 for members.
Four Cellos
The Shelter Island Friends of Music will present “Four Cellos,” a performance by Ani Kalayjian, Laura Metcalf, Andrew Yee, and Caleb van der Swaagh, on Sunday afternoon at 3 at the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church. The concert will feature music by Bach, Mozart, Wagner, Bartok, Schubert, Piazzolla, and others. Admission is free, and a reception with the artists will follow the concert.
Challenges for Women
Ille Arts in Amagansett will host “Sustaining Women’s Creative Enterprise,” a panel discussion with Sara De Luca, the gallery’s director, Barbara Layton, the owner of Babette’s restaurant, and Kate Mueth, artistic director of the Neo-Political Cowgirls, on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
The conversation will focus on the challenges to and the outlook for women in creative entrepreneurship on the East End and beyond. The program is free, and wine and appetizers will be served. Guests have been encouraged to bring business cards for sharing during the networking portion of the evening.
