Gary L. Babin, who grew up in Montauk and went to East Hampton High School, died at home in Smyrna, Del., on Sept. 27. He was 71 and had been diagnosed with mesothelioma in April.

Mr. Babin, a son of Lawrence L. and Mary Babin of Montauk, was born on Dec. 29, 1947. He was a petty officer in the Navy from 1965 to 1969, and served in Vietnam. He worked as a truck driver for many years and then was the transportation director at the Matheny School and Hospital in Peapack, N.J., retiring in 2011.

In his personal time, he liked to play cards with friends in Montauk, gamble, shoot pool, play golf, and race his 1965 GTO, including at the Bridgehampton Race Circuit.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Babin, two sons, Gary Babin and James Babin, a daughter, Kathleen Nowsch, and four stepchildren, Michael Cetnar, Sharon Johnson, Tricia Young, and Lori Pesi.

There will be a service for Mr. Babin at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk on Nov. 9 at 11 a.m.
