The Y.M.C.A. East Hampton RECenter is joining an initiative called Organ Donor Enrollment Day, which is Thursday, Oct. 10.
The Y.M.C.A. is joining with hundreds of nonprofit organizations to encourage people to enlist as organ donors.
"Take a minute and make your day memorable by signing up to help save lives!" the East Hampton Y.M.C.A. said in an email.
LiveOnNY, a nonprofit group that launched the registration effort in 2015, said one organ donor can help save up to eight lives. The group also said about 120,000 people nationwide, and about 10,000 New Yorkers, are on the waiting list for organ transplants now.
Ninety-two percent of New Yorkers support organ donation, but far fewer people have registered to become an organ donor, the group said, including 33 percent of Suffolk County residents and 26 percent of Nassau County residents.
LiveOnNY will enroll people at a table at the RECenter here on Thursday. Those who are interested can also sign up online at registerme.org/enrollmentday.
LiveOnNY, which serves the greater New York City area, said it has registered about five million organ donors so far and has helped save more than 20,000 lives through organ transplants.
