Head-On Collision Shuts Down Portion of Noyac Road

Thu, 07/18/2019 - 11:08

A head-on collision involving a pool company truck injured five people and shut down a portion of Noyac Road in North Sea during rush hour on Thursday afternoon.

Southampton Town police were called to the accident on Noyac Road, about 400 feet east of the intersection with Whalebone Landing Road, at 4:27 p.m., according to Sgt. James Cavanagh. A Mercedes station wagon and a pool truck carrying granular chlorine collided, the sergeant said. One vehicle's occupant was decontaminated on the scene, he said. The town's hazardous materials team was called.

"We haven't determined what the extent of the leak is," Sergeant Cavanagh said from headquarters after the accident. "Most of it is contained in the vehicle," he said.

A person stuck in the wreckage was reported, and the North Sea Fire Department heavy rescue squad was called. Five injuries were reported, though police were not immediately sure of how serious they were.

Police closed Noyac Road, diverting traffic at Roses Grove Road and Deerfield Road.

The accident on Noyac Road, one of the most used back roads on the South Fork, caused an even-greater-than-usual tie-up of traffic on Montauk Highway on the rainy summer afternoon.
