A 15-year-old boy sustained a head injury and a broken leg after being hit by a Whitmores van in East Hampton last Thursday afternoon.
The boy, whose name was not released because he is a minor, may have ridden out from Wireless Road in front of the vehicle, which was traveling northeast on Cove Hollow Road at about 4:40 p.m. Susana Rivera-Mata, 56, of East Hampton was behind the wheel and was unable to stop in time, she told police.
There was no criminality involved and no tickets were issued, Detective Sgt. Dan Toia said this week. The boy lives on Gingerbread Lane and in New York City.
The East Hampton Village Ambulance Association treated him at the scene and transported to the airport, where a county medevac helicopter airlifted him to Stony Brook University Hospital, a level-one trauma center.
He was initially listed in the intensive care unit, Detective Toia said. “They are expecting he makes a full recovery,” the detective said, though he had been seriously hurt.
