Three Times the Limit

Thu, 08/08/2019 - 14:14

Just after Friday midnight, an East Hampton Town police officer arrested an alleged drunken driver whose brand-new Mercedes had been clocked at 91 miles per hour on Town Lane in East Hampton, three times the 30 m.p.h. limit there.

James N. Cooke, 44, who gave an address in the village, was pulled over near Spring Close Highway at about 11:45 p.m. He “appeared anxious,” police said, and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. He was placed under arrest at about 12:10 a.m. on Saturday.

Mr. Cooke was held for the rest of the night for a morning arraignment. Justice Steven Tekulsky released him on his own recognizance.

East Hampton Village police charged a 70-year-old woman with driving while intoxicated last Thursday evening after receiving a report that a Honda was driving erratically on Gingerbread Lane. At about 9:15 p.m., an officer found the vehicle at the intersection of Cooper Lane and Cedar Street and saw it cross the double-yellow line on Cedar Street.

Brahna Ruth Yassky, who lives in Springs and works in Manhattan, appeared intoxicated, the officer said. She was given field sobriety tests, but protested that she could not complete them due to vertigo. She allegedly admitted to having had one martini. She was charged with misdemeanor D.W.I. and two traffic violations, and was held for the remainder of the night before being released on her own recognizance in the morning.
