Legislator Kara Hahn, the majority leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, has endorsed Nancy Goroff in her bid for the Democratic Party’s nomination to challenge Representative Lee Zeldin in New York’s First Congressional District next year. Ms. Goroff, who announced her candidacy in July, is a professor and chairwoman of Stony Brook University’s chemistry department.
“We need leaders in Washington who are going to listen to the needs of their constituents and approach our country’s most complex problems utilizing facts,” Ms. Hahn said in a statement issued Monday. “That’s why I’m endorsing Nancy in her run for Congress. As a leader and professor at Stony Brook University, and with over 22 years in the community listening to the needs of families, colleagues, and students, Nancy has the skills we need at the table in D.C. I’m proud to endorse Nancy Goroff for Congress.”
“For almost eight years, Leader Hahn has gotten results for Suffolk County,” Ms. Goroff said. “She’s a fierce champion for our environment, introducing legislation to assess local vulnerability to sea level rise, require testing of our groundwater for toxic contaminants, and preserve open spaces in Port Jefferson Station and Setauket. I am running to bring a scientist’s perspective to Congress so we can get serious about addressing climate change. It means a lot to me to have the support of someone with such a strong environmental record as Leader Hahn.”
314 Action, a group working to elect Democratic scientists, is also backing Ms. Goroff’s campaign.
