Update, Tuesday, 9 a.m.: Anticipating upward of five inches of heavy, wet snow, Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore has declared a state of emergency for Tuesday and has encouraged town residents "to stay off the roads to allow our dedicated crews from the Highway Department, Parks Department and Municipal Works to effectively perform snow removal activities." Town facilities including the transfer stations will be closed on Tuesday.
Update, Monday, 6:05 p.m.: With impending snow promising to make morning and evening commutes difficult on Tuesday, more closures have been announced.
All East Hampton Town offices and the town recycling centers will be closed, as will schools across the South Fork.
At 2:50 p.m., the Southampton Town supervisor's office said that Tueday's town board meeting was still scheduled for 1 p.m., but that it was advising people to consider participating in it virtually and staying off the roads.
The link to attend that meeting is here, and the passcode is 568928.
Original, Monday, 11:30 a.m.: The South Fork could receive four to six inches of snow by Tuesday morning along with wind gusts as high as 40 miles per hour, according to a winter storm watch alert announced by the National Weather Service on Monday morning.
Depending on when the snowfall becomes heavy — which as of 11:30 a.m. Monday was estimated to take place "around daybreak Tuesday" — the weather service said that "travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute." Other parts of the tri-state area could receive as much as eight inches of snow, the agency said.
The winter storm watch is in effect from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday. On Twitter, the agency said that "minor to moderate coastal flooding impacts are also possible."
By midday Monday, the first of many expected closures was announced. In an email, the East Hampton Food Pantry said that "for the safety of our volunteers and clients, we will be closing the food pantry on Tuesday," which is the regular distribution day. The pantry will reopen for food distribution on Wednesday, instead, from 1 to 6 p.m. and will "make our deliveries to local senior complexes on Thursday," according to the announcement.
This is a developing story that will be updated as more information, including closures of schools and government offices, becomes available.
