July 2, 1987

    Costa Rica became on June 24 the East End Men’s Night Soccer League spring season playoff champion by virtue of a shot by Carlos Vargas late in the second half that found the upper right corner of the Springs-Village Shoe Store goal.

    After an evenly-played first half, Costa Rica, the regular-season champion, which had a deeper bench than the Springs team, applied continuous pressure throughout the second period, during which Costa Rica forwards took numerous shots from point-blank range that either went astray or were stopped by Springs’s goalie, Bob Moss.

    Among the close calls was a direct kick in the penalty area by Carlos Solis that went wide to the right; a hard, low shot by Vargas toward the left corner that Moss batted away, and a missed header by Vargas on a cross in front of the goal by Solis.

    In Sunday’s Little League all-star game, played at Lions Field in East Hampton, the American Division, coached by John Drobecker of Montauk, defeated the National Division, coached by Van Quick, 11-7. Drobecker used four pitchers — Brandon Fazio of Montauk, Ross Gload of Marder’s, and Guy Ficeto and Justin Geehreng, both of the Masons. Quick used five hurlers — his son, Steven, Kevin Somers, and Ryan Heaney, all of the Town P.B.A., Shane Davis of the Springs Fire Department, and Pat Coyle of the Village P.B.A.

    Paul Annacone’s hopes of repeating or bettering his 1984 quarterfinal finish at Wimbledon were dashed Monday by France’s Guy Forget in a five-set third-round match that the East Hampton-reared tennis professinal would rather forget.

    . . . Meanwhile, Annacone and Christo Van Rensburg remained alive in the doubles on Tuesday as they defeated John Fitzgerald and Tomas Smid 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in a third-round match.

July 9, 1987

    Tim Egan of Sag Harbor, a bayman who plays rugby and softball here, took third place recently in the metropolitan region professional arm wrestling tournament’s heavyweight division, enabling him to compete in the national championships on Aug. 8. Eagan repeated as the heavyweight winner of the New York State professional arm wrestling chammpionships on June 28.

July 16, 1987

    Troy Bowe is apparently set to become the first Bridgehampton High School graduate ever to play Division 1 basketball. Bowe, who starred as the Killer Bees’ point guard for the past three years, earning all-state and all-county honors, recently accepted a full four-year athletic scholarship to the University of Hawaii.

    . . . “I saw the Empire State team tryouts recently,” said Bowe’s coach at Bridgehampton, John Niles, “and there isn’t a guard on the Island of Troy’s caliber. Players like him don’t come around too often.”
