Two at Borghi
The Mark Borghi Gallery in Bridgehampton will present work by the South Fork artists Gregory Johnston and Jason Nower from Saturday through March 8.
Mr. Johnston, who lives in East Hampton, has long been interested in car culture. His recent work combines the sensibility of minimalists and color field painters, such as Donald Judd and Kenneth Noland, with industrial production and materials, including aluminum and automotive enamel, in bright, abstract wall panels.
Along with Mr. Johnston’s work, the gallery will show photographs by Mr. Nower, who lives in Southampton, that were taken in Mr. Johnston’s studio and document the artist’s working process.
A Dealer Chooses
“Dealer’s Choice III,” an exhibition of work by 22 East End artists, organized by Arlene Bujese, will open at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in Bridgehampton with a reception Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. It will remain on view through March 6.
The salon-style installation includes painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and printmaking. Participating artists are Shari Abramson, Marcel Bally, Sheila Batiste, Monica Banks, Deborah Black, Stephanie Brody-Lederman, Darlene Charneco, Mary Daunt, Josh Dayton, A.G. Duggan, Patricia Feiwel, Pamela Collins Focarino, Carol Hunt, Sarah Jaffe Turnbull, Dennis Leri, Setha Low, Christa Maiwald, Fulvio Massi, Robert Mehling, Alexander Russo, Dan Welden, and Lewis Zacks.
Plein Air at Ashawagh
“Plein Air and Beyond,” a show of paintings by members of the Wednesday Group, will be on view at Ashawagh Hall in Springs Saturday through Monday, with a reception set for Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m.
The group is a loose coalition of artists who meet on a weekly basis to paint at various East End locations, although the work in the exhibition will include portraits and landscapes painted elsewhere. Jean Mahoney, Deb Palmer, Alyce Peifer, Gene Samuelson, Frank Sofo, Aurelio Torres, and Pam Vossen are the exhibiting artists.
The gallery will be open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday and Monday from 10 to 4.
For Art Lovers
The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill will join a dozen other museums nationwide in the “Hearts for Art” campaign, which will celebrate the love of art and Valentine’s Day from tomorrow through Sunday. Throughout the weekend, visitors can pick up paper hearts at the information desk and place them in front of their favorite works in the galleries.
Other participating museums include the Brooklyn Museum, the Denver Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the St. Louis Art Museum.
Charlotte Park in Chelsea
An exhibition of paintings by Charlotte Park will open today at the Berry Campbell Gallery in Chelsea and continue through March 12. Ms. Park established a studio in Springs with her husband, the painter James Brooks, in 1957. She died in 2010 at the age of 92.
The exhibition includes over 20 paintings and works on paper ranging in date from 1950, when the artist worked with a monochrome palette, through the mid-’50s, when she reintroduced color into her art, to the ’70s and ’80s, when her abstractions shed their muscularity for a more simplified, delicate look.
Roberta Smith of The New York Times, writing late in the artist’s career, called Park “a natural painter and a gifted colorist” whose “ascension into the ranks of widely known Abstract Expressionists” was long overdue.
