Scratching the Surface

The Southampton Cultural Center is showing “Shaping the Surface” through May 20.

Arlene Bujese organized the show, which features work with tactile or more three-dimensional surfaces. The artists include Bob Bachler, Jim Gemake, Margaret Kerr, Pope Noell, and Charles Waller, who employ such techniques as assemblage, collage, textural application, and modeling of forms using fired clay, found objects, clay bricks, thick paint, and paper/canvas collage.

A reception will be held tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m.

New Show at Kramoris

Dinah Maxwell Smith and Joyce Brian will show their work at Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor next Thursday through May 16, with a reception for the artists on Saturday, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Ms. Smith has a loose painterly style to capture the quotidian pleasures of East End life in richly colored compositions using color opposites rather than black to imply depth and contrast.

Ms. Brian uses her artwork to reflect her life and surroundings as well as an inner, private world. The focus here will be on her paintings of animals: the goats of Shelter Island, sheep of Scuttle Hole, and birds of the ferry.

The show will remain on view through May 16.

Saying Thanks

Hampton Photo Arts, and Framing will present “The Thank You Art Show” at Ashawagh Hall this weekend.

In addition to more than 100 exhibiting artists, the show will also showcase South Fork local businesses and services. Local crafters, artisan food purveyors, jewelry makers, personal service providers, and charities will all be represented.

A reception will be held on Saturday from 5:30 to 11 p.m., with food provided by Nutrition Dragon and beverages by Springs Wines and Liquors and Hamptons Water Company. Julian Pasqual and others will play music.

Retreat Artist Chosen

Jeanette Martone has won a solo show, called “Hope’s Journey,” at the Richard Demato Gallery in Sag Harbor. She was selected by Christina Strassfield, the head curator of Guild Hall and Kathryn Markel, a gallery owner in Bridgehampton, who served as jurors in an art contest to raise awareness and money for the Retreat, a shelter for domestic violence victims on the South Fork.

The artist works in graphite on paper to depict subjects she witnessed as a volunteer in the Dominican Republic. The show will feature 26 works and will open on Saturday with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. It will remain on view through May 11.

Cold Surf at Neoteric

Neoteric Fine Art in Amagansett will present James Katsipis’s “#coldwatersurferseries” beginning tomorrow with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Katsipis will show a series of images taken around and in the winter waters of Montauk and Ireland, adopting a “seal’s-eye view” of freezing perfect waves and the brave (or insane?) surfers who ride them. As the artist says, “it’s not vacation brochure material.”

The reception will feature music by the Montauk Project, beer from Montauk Brewing Company and PBR, and promotional items from several surf-related companies. The show will remain on view through May 22.
