Optical Illusions
The Halsey Mckay Gallery in East Hampton is showing “Ether Scrims, Dark Rooms, and Calculative Planes,” work by Michael DeLucia, Bryan Graf, and Kate Shepherd. The three artists use “virtual and analog interventions in photography, painting, and sculpture” to explore geometry, pattern, and computation. The work is characterized by optical illusions resulting from placing multidimensional forms onto the flat planes of photography. The show is on view through Sept. 8.
Surface at Ashawagh
“Casual Pursuits” is the title of a show at Ashawagh Hall in Springs this weekend, presented by Surface Library, a former gallery in that hamlet. The proprietors of Surface Library, James Kennedy and Bob Bachler, create paintings and ceramic art, respectively. They will show “low-key exploratory antics from the artists’ studio.”
The show will be on view Saturday at noon through Monday at 2 p.m. An opening reception will take place on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.
Moby and “Re:Purposed”
On Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m., Neoteric Fine Art in Amagansett will host a benefit for the Moby Project promising art, music, beer, barbecue, and a silent auction for $20. The Moby Project will take place at the end of September at various venues on the South Fork, featuring themes taken from the novel in art installations and performances.
On view at Neoteric is “Re:Purposed,” an exhibition featuring art and design from found and reused materials, with work by Rossa Cole, Billy Strong, Scott Szegeski, Ethan Abramson, Christine Lidrbauch, Peter Spacek, Jo Shane, Scott Bluedorn, Pierre Cote, and David Elze. The show will remain on view through Sept. 18.
New at Crazy Monkey
Tomorrow, a show of work by Barbara Bilotta, the winner of the Crazy Monkey’s 2013 Art Competition, will open at the Amagansett gallery. The work will include a series of large-format colorful abstractions. Members of the artist cooperative at the gallery will also have work on view. The show will be up until Sept. 29. A reception will be held on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.
An Art Space Opens
Dorfman Projects will open a new exhibition and project space at 2699 Deerfield Road in Noyac this weekend featuring work by Alex Katz, Dennis Oppenheim, Graham Gillmore, Alejandro Diaz, John F. Simon Jr., and Siebren Versteeg. The midcentury modern-style house will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dorfman Projects is directed by Fred Dorfman and works with artists and collectors to promote art investments and sales. The primary focus is contemporary masters working in all mediums, in addition to a fine-art publishing program of two and three-dimensional multiples and unique works.
Marcelle’s Realities
The Peter Marcelle Gallery in Bridgehampton will present “Between Realities,” a group show, beginning Saturday with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. It aims to explore realism in the contemporary art world with work by Andrew Wyeth, Jamie Wyeth, John Koch, Luigi Lucioni, Marc Sijan, Caleb Carter, Brenda Zlamany, Anna Jurinich, Scott McIntire, Bo Bartlett, Miriam Dougenis, Win Zibeon, and others. The show will remain on view through Sept. 15.
Standing Up in Water Mill
Hampton Hang in Water Mill will show “Stand Up,” a series of paintings and installations that are devoted to promoting social change and activism. The show will open on Saturday with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. and remain on view through Sept. 19.
“Three Solos on Place”
Ian Spencer Bell will perform “Geography: Three Solos on Place” at Ille Arts in Amagansett on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow at 7.
