Susan Ecker at Peter Marcelle

The Peter Marcelle Project in Southampton will open “Susan Ecker: Players, Places” with a reception on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition will continue through Dec. 6.

Ms. Ecker paints recognizable images, including people and landscapes that are distilled through selection and reduction into haunting surfaces on which painting sometimes blurs into drawing and narratives are suggested but details withheld.

In her words, “Subject matters. Iconography is important to me. As I believe drawing is visual language, I discuss what I see. Once said, I concentrate on the extraction: to simplify the description, to edit out to essentials.”

Ms. Ecker divides her time between East Hampton, New York City, and Donnybrook in Western Australia, where she teaches painting at Edith Cowan University.

“Gems” at Grenning

The Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor will hold its annual “Gems” show of small works from its artists’ studios, from Saturday through Jan 3. An opening reception will take place on Saturday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The exhibition will feature nine artists, including two, Matthew Weigle and Yin Yong Chun, who are new to the gallery. Mr. Chun’s still-life paintings combine “impeccable realism,” according to the gallery, with elements that reflect his Chinese heritage. Mr. Weigle favors still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, which the gallery cites for their “purity and clarity.”

Work by Christian White, Chad Fisher, Maryann Lucas, Edwina Lucas, Sarah Lamb, Kristy Gordon, and Carl Bretzke will also be on view.

Hang Your Work in Montauk

An unusual open house will take place at the Woodbine Collection in Montauk on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. “How Do You Hang Montauk?” is an invitation to artists and musicians to bring their art, their music, and their friends to the gallery, at 649 Montauk Highway just west of 7-Eleven.

The artwork, which the gallery will hang, will remain on view through Dec. 5.

Call for Entries

The annual Hamptons Juried Art Show, which will benefit the Retreat, has invited artists to submit work, from which four winners will be selected to participate in a group exhibition at RJD Gallery in Sag Harbor in May. The jurors are Ann Chwatsky, a photographer and New York University professor; Richard J. Demato, an art dealer, and Eve Gianni, a gallery director.

The nonrefundable entry fee is $50. Applications, for which the deadline is Jan. 20, can be found at hamptonsjuriedartshow.com.
