Art Supporting Conservation

Opening at the Southampton Arts Center on Saturday
By

“Light on Shadow,” an exhibition of work by Shawn Heinrichs, an Emmy Award-winning cinematographer, photographer, and marine conservationist, will open at the Southampton Arts Center on Saturday and continue through July 16, with a reception set for Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Blue Sphere Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Mr. Heinrichs to help safeguard the planet’s oceans and stop the destruction of threatened marine species and habitats.

Organized by Matthew Hockley Smith, an English art dealer and consultant, the show will include more than 40 photographs and feature several public programs. Mr. Heinrichs and Mr. Hockley Smith will lead a gallery tour on Monday morning at 11. Mr. Heinrichs will also be on hand for talks on July 8 and July 15.

“Racing Extinction,” a documentary by Louie Psihoyos, an Oscar-winning director, will be screened on Friday, June 1, at 6 p.m., followed by a discussion with Mr. Heinrichs. The film follows a team of artists and activists, among them Mr. Heinrichs, on an undercover operation to expose the hidden world of species endangerment by infiltrating some of the most dangerous black markets and documenting the effects of carbon emissions. Tickets are $10.

“Art is my passion, conservation is my purpose, and for me the two are inseparable,” Mr. Heinrichs has said. “We started the foundation to use art in all its forms to connect people on an emotional level with majestic yet endangered marine wildlife and inspire them to act before it is too late.”

A portion of the proceeds from art sales will help fund three Blue Sphere projects, including protecting the global epicenter of tropical marine biodiversity in West Papua, using technology to safeguard protected marine areas, and stopping the impending extinction of tuna.

Following its debut in Southampton, the exhibition will travel to Los Angeles and London, among other cities.
