Bertram E. Bromberg
Dr. Bertram E. Bromberg, a distinguished plastic and reconstructive surgeon who summered in Montauk for nearly 50 years from 1959 to 2008, died on June 22 in Jupiter, Fla. The cause was congestive heart failure; he had been ill for six months.
Dr. Bromberg, who was 96, enjoyed gardening as well as sportfishing and continued to fish into his 90s, said his daughter, Betzy Bromberg. He began living in Jupiter year round in 2008.
He was born on Feb. 15, 1918, in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan to Harry Bromberg and the former Frances Finkelstein. He grew up there, then attended Columbia University School of Dentistry from 1937 to 1941, and then Long Island College of Medicine until 1945.
Dr. Bromberg served as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II. During the Korean War and until 1959, he was stationed at Philadelphia Naval Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in the Bronx, now known as the James J. Peters V.A. Medical Center.
He married Gloria Bromberg, who survives, on Dec. 22, 1945. The couple moved to Long Island, living in Great Neck, Old Westbury, and Glen Head, where they raised four children.
The family first visited Montauk in the late 1950s, Ms. Bromberg said. They bought property and built a house on Foxboro Road in the early 1960s. Upon his retirement in 1990, Dr. Bromberg and his wife moved to Sugarloaf Key, Fla., and then Jupiter.
Dr. Bromberg was a plastic and reconstructive surgeon from 1945 until his retirement. He was a partner in the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group for 36 years; director of plastic surgery at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn from 1959 to 1977, and director of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at North Shore University Hospital-Cornell University Medical College in Manhasset from 1984 until his retirement.
A member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Bromberg was honored with a lifetime achievement award from the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons.
In addition to his wife and Ms. Bromberg, who lives in Los Angeles, Dr. Bromberg is survived by a son, Bruce Bromberg of Jupiter, and a daughter, Bobbie Pepitone of Fort Myers, Fla. Another son, Bill Bromberg, died before him. Three grandchildren also survive.
