Betty Eames, 76

    Betty Eames of East Hampton, a member of American Legion Post 419 in Amagansett and a former fire police volunteer with the Springs Department, died of pneumonia on April 13 at Southampton Hospital. She was 76 and had lung cancer since 2008. 

     A resident of East Hampton since 1970, Ms. Eames lived on Oakview Highway for the last 10 years, but was a resident of the South Fork since 1965 when she moved to Southampton from her native North Carolina, her son, Clifford Eames Jr. of East Hampton, said. “She was a hard-working, well-respected woman,” who did laundry and housecleaning, her son said. “She will be missed greatly by her family.”

    Betty Eames was born on Feb. 23, 1938, in Durham, N.C., to Harry Frank Ezzell and the former Sola Su Travis. She grew up and graduated from high school in nearby Efland. She and Clifford J. Eames, who died in 1992, were married in July 1967.

    Ms. Eames enjoyed bowling, her son said, and was a member of the traveling women’s team based at East Hampton Bowl. She attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in East Hampton.

    In addition to Mr. Eames, another son, Phil Ashley of Mebane, N.C., survives, as do two grandchildren.

    The family welcomed visitors on April 15 at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton, where the Rev. Doug Kinney of the Community Bible Church in Noyac officiated. She was cremated, and her ashes will be dispersed in Three Mile Harbor, as were those of her late husband.
