A child bicycling on Indian Wells Highway in Amagansett was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with potentially serious injuries after being hit by a sport utility vehicle on Thursday afternoon.

The accident occurred on the corner of Further Lane at 12:38 p.m.

The Amagansett Fire Department transported the child, who is reportedly 8 years old and was bicycling with her family, to the East Hampton Airport, where it met the Suffolk County helicopter.

East Hampton Town police detectives were still on scene investigating the accident at about 1:45 p.m. The southbound lane was shut down, and traffic was being alternated with westbound traffic.
