Christine Barnes, 86
Christine D. Barnes, who, with her husband of 61 years, made Amagansett her summer home for many years, died at home there on Aug. 20. Her family said her death was due to cardiopulmonary arrest and unexpected. Known as Chris, Mrs. Barnes, a physical education teacher in Highland, N.Y., for almost 40 years, was 86.
She was born to John Gallo and the former Concetta DeBrino on July 5, 1928, in the Bronx, where she grew up. She graduated from Christopher Columbus High School there, where she demonstrated a deep love of sports, particularly basketball. She attended and graduated from Ithaca College, with a degree in physical education and health.
She and Bernard A. Barnes, who survives, met at Ithaca and were married on Aug. 23, 1952, at Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in the Bronx. They settled in Highland, where she became a teacher, and they raised two daughters.
Early in their marriage, the couple were invited to spend some time with friends in Amagansett. They fell in love with it and were soon summering there every year. It wasn’t long before they bought property and built a house. There, Mrs. Barnes loved swimming in the ocean and entertaining family and friends who were always welcome.
The couple’s daughters survive. They are Bernadette Wiggin, who splits her time between Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Springs, and Patricia Barnes of Palenville, N.Y. Mrs. Barnes also is survived by three siblings, Dolores Binns of Mahopac, N.Y., Marie Yaconetti of North Truro, Mass., and John Gallo of Little River, S.C.
Mrs. Barnes was a longtime member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Highland, where a funeral Mass was celebrated by the Rev. Thomas Lutz on Aug. 28. She was buried in Highland Cemetery.
