Christopher Holden
Christopher Holden, who was said to have beaten throat cancer within the past year, died at home in Montauk of a heart attack on May 11. He was 58.
He was born on Aug. 7, 1958, in Glen Cove, one of three children of Frank Holden and the former Virginia Roth, both of whom died before him. He grew up there and graduated from Glen Cove High School with the class of 1976. He then studied hotel management at the State University of New York at Delhi, earning a degree in 1979.
Mr. Holden’s nickname in Montauk was Wolfie. He was known to wear a T-shirt with the words “Wolf Lake” on it, which referred to Wolf Lake in the Catskills, where his parents had a house.
Mr. Holden’s first job in Montauk was at the Shagwong restaurant and bar. He then worked at Gurney’s Inn. But he didn’t like working on weekends or at night, his brother, Richard Holden of Glen Cove, said, and after a time became a commercial fisherman, something he pursued for many years. About 10 years ago he went into landscaping, opening his own business, Chris’s Lawn Service. Six years ago he bought his own house.
His brother paid him this tribute: “He was a kind soul, a gentle giant, and a good friend and brother.” His sister, Virginia Carruthers of Topeka, Kan., died in 2013. Mr. Holden was cremated. His brother will bury his ashes with the ashes of their parents and sister in Wurtsboro, N.Y. There will be a celebration of his life on Sept. 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Shagwong Tavern.
