Update, 5 p.m.: Southampton, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, and Sag Harbor schools will also be closed on Wednesday.

Original, 12:37 p.m.: The hope of life returning to normal will have to wait another day, as schools throughout East Hampton have announced a second day of cancellations due to double-digit snowfall.

On Tuesday morning, as flurries continued to fall, all districts throughout East Hampton announced a Wednesday closure — including Springs, Montauk, Wainscott, and Amagansett. Administrators were hopeful that classes would resume by Thursday. The Ross School in East Hampton and Bridgehampton also canceled classes for Wednesday.

Students were dismissed early on Monday, and classes were canceled for Tuesday.

Last year, by comparison, most South Fork districts had three snow days. Generally, two snow days are included in each calendar. According to New York State law, students must attend 180 days of school each year. Typically, if districts go past their allotment of two snow days, vacation days are subtracted from either the February or April weeklong breaks.

“With such heavy snow accumulation, it will take a while to dig the schools out and figure out where to put all of it,” said Elizabeth Mendelman, the Springs School Board president, who cited over two feet of accumulation in Springs. “All the districts need time to dig out. This is a lot of snow.”

Other closures and delays will likely be announced throughout the day.
