Comedy and More Returns
In addition to its three Main Stage productions, reported on separately, Sag Harbor’s Bay Street Theatre has a busy season of comedy events planned, as well as its annual benefit in July.
A new series of three Saturday night comedy shows at 8 begins this weekend with an appearance by Paula Poundstone, a regular panelist on the NPR weekly news quiz show “Wait, Wait . . . Don’t Tell Me.” Shows by Ms. Poundstone, who tours nationally and is a repeat visitor to Sag Harbor, are known for their give-and-take with the audience.
Richard Lewis will be next, on June 21. As one of Larry David’s sidekicks on the HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” he played himself, a recognizable neurotic whose stand-up routines focus on his adventures in therapy. He appears in an upcoming film, “Squirrels to Nuts‚” directed by Peter Bogdanovich, and was also seen in “Leaving Las Vegas,” “Drunks,” and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.”
Charles Busch is a comedic playwright and actor who has created such memorable titles as “The Divine Sister,” “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom,” and “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife.” He starred in “Auntie Mame” on Broadway and in his own plays, “Shanghai Moon” and “The Lady in Question.”
Tickets for this series start at $65 and can be purchased at baystreet.org or the theater box office.
These shows will complement Bay Street’s Comedy Club, popular Monday-night presentations of comedy acts, which this year include Kevin Pollack on June 2, and, later in the season, Steve Rannazzisi, Heather McDonald, Bobby Collins, Bob Marley, and Robert Klein.
The Monday-night shows include the return of the “All-Star Comedy Showcase‚” hosted by Joseph Vecsey, who is also host of “The Call Back Podcast‚” a talk show about the art and business of comedy. His guests for the night of June 9 are Jeffery Joseph, Nathan Macintosh, Andrew Schulz, and Jamie Roberts. Tickets to the Comedy Club are $69.50; tickets to the showcase are $25.
Bay Street’s summer benefit will take place on July 12 this year and honor Kate Burton, April Gornik, and Sheldon Harnick. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with an awards reception, with more cocktails, dinner, and dancing to follow. The event will include performances by Patina Miller and Tovah Feldshuh. Peter Ambrose will be in charge of catering. Tickets begin at $550, $395 for those 40 and under. Details on all programs and events can be found at baystreet.org.
