The drivers of two northbound commercial vehicles were taken to the hospital after one rear-ended the other on Route 114 shortly after 7:30 Thursday morning, according to the East Hampton Town police.

A 59-year-old East Hampton man driving a 1996 dump truck had come to a stop in order to make a left turn into a private driveway when his truck was struck from behind by a 2013 Ford Transit Connect cargo van. The second driver, also from East Hampton, was 34.

The small cargo van was a John Hummel and Associates Custom Builders work vehicle. The company is based on Route 114 in East Hampton. It is not immediately known to whom the dump truck was registered, and the drivers' names were not immediately available.

The driver of the cargo van, who was said to have been conscious when emergency medical technicians arrived, was taken to East Hampton Airport and transported by helicopter from there to Stony Brook University Hospital, a level-one trauma center.

The driver of the dump truck was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.

Route 114 was closed to traffic after the accident, but was reopened by about 9 a.m.
