East Hampton Town police are investigating the death of an Amagansett man in an accident on Windmill Lane in that hamlet early Saturday morning.

Erik D. Payne, 25, of Merrills Road in Lazy Point was declared dead on the scene by investigators from the Suffolk County medical examiner's office, according to a statement by East Hampton Town police.

Mr. Payne was said to be driving a 2001 Ford pickup truck north on Windmill Lane around 2:30 a.m. when the vehicle apparently drifted slightly off the road, struck a snow bank, then crashed into a utility pole. He was alone in the truck, police said.

The medical examiner's office is assisting town police in its investigation. The police have asked anyone with information about the circumstances and events that led up to the accident to call them at 537-7575.
