Elsie Edwards, 92

Elsie J. Edwards, who lived on Atlantic Avenue in Amagansett for 66 of her nearly 93 years, died at home on Friday. Her health had been in decline over the last several months, said her son, Bruce J. Edwards of Richmond, Va.

A member of the Amagansett Presbyterian Church, she loved music and sang in the church choir, her son said. She was a determined woman with an energetic spirit, he said.

Mrs. Edwards was born in Southampton on July 11, 1921, to John Thorvald Johnson and the former Agnes Lindman. She grew up in East Hampton, her son said, graduating from East Hampton High School before earning an associate’s degree from Rider College in Lawrence Township, N.J.

She moved to Amagansett after her marriage to Norman C. Edwards, a bunker fisherman with deep roots in the hamlet. They raised three children there. Mr. Edwards died before her.

Along with her son, Mrs. Edwards is survived by a daughter, Linda Baker of East Hampton, as well as 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. A sister, Elenor Rush of East Hampton, also survives. Another son, Norman C. Edwards Jr., died in 2011.

A funeral was held on Tuesday morning at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in East Hampton, the Rev. Steven Howarth officiating.
