Frederick E. Sellers Jr.
Frederick E. Sellers Jr., an East Hampton Town building inspector for 26 years, died in his sleep at home in Cape Coral, Fla., on Aug. 15. He was 78.
Mr. Sellers, a longtime resident of Springs, served on the Springs School Board for 20 years, 8 of those as president. He was also a volunteer with the Springs Fire Department for 18 years and a member of the vestry at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in East Hampton.
Born in Brooklyn on Dec. 30, 1937, to Frederick E. Sellers Sr. and the former Dorothy Ford, he was raised in the Rockaways and Inwood. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University.
On June 20, 1959, he married the former Janet Taylor. He began working in the family business, Sellers and Sons Moving and Storage, as a young man, and when the couple moved to Springs in 1970, he worked at first as a building contractor before being hired as a town building inspector in 1973. The couple raised their two sons and a daughter in Springs.
Fishing was a passion for him, as were his family and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking, and was a super handyman capable of fixing anything and everything, his family said. He was a member of the Maidstone Gun Club for many years.
He also loved to travel and see new places. After his retirement in 1999, Mr. and Mrs. Sellers eventually settled year round in Cape Coral, where he was a member of the St. Hilary Episcopal Church.
Mr. Sellers is survived by his wife and by his children, Pamela Bennett of East Hampton, Scott Sellers of Big Sky, Mont., and Matthew Sellers of Cape Coral. His sister, June Strining of Medford, also survives, as do 12 grandchildren.
A service was held Aug. 20 at St. Luke’s. Mr. Sellers was buried at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in East Hampton.
