Full Moon, Full Plate
Taking advantage of tomorrow night's full moon, the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society has planned an evening hike through the hardwood forest of Barcelona Neck in Sag Harbor. The view of Gardiner's Bay from the blowout atop the high dune is not to be missed.
Hikers will meet at 8 p.m. by the Sag Harbor Golf Club clubhouse, about three miles north of Route 114's intersection with Stephen Hand's Path. Richard Lupoletti will lead the pack.
On Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m., the society will present another of its "movable feast" hikes, this time through the Nature Conservancy's Merrill Lake Sanctuary in Springs. Nancy Kane will lead walkers around the sanctuary and then back to her house for bagels, scones, and hot drinks. The meeting place is the sanctuary entrance, on Springs-Fireplace Road.
Napeague State Park will be the setting on Wednesday for a three-mile hike through pitch pines and oaks, duneland, and onto the ocean beach. Mr. Lupoletti has asked hikers to meet him at the utility station on Napeague Meadow Road, north of Montauk Highway and south of Cranberry Hole Road.
Vikki Hilles of the Group for the South Fork will lead a brisk, get-the-holiday-weight-off jaunt through Sears Bellows County Park in Hampton Bays on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Reservations are necessary, and may be made through the Group's Bridgehampton headquarters.
A North Fork Audubon Society naturalist, Tom Damiani, will set off on an "owl prowl" tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank. Following a slide show on owl facts and folklore, Mr. Damiani will lead a hayride to the edge of a farm field to listen and look for saw-whet, screech, and great horned owls.
Refreshments will be served following the program, which costs $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. The Cornell Cooperative Extension Service, the sponsor, has asked participants to bring a flashlight, wear old shoes, and preregister by calling its Marine Center on Cedar Beach Road in Southold.
Finally, the Wild Bird Crossing shop in Bridgehampton is holding a free workshop Saturday on backyard bird-feeding, beginning at 10 a.m. at the store. Reservations have been requested.
