Hearing Set on Emergency Room Site Lease

By
Christopher Walsh

The East Hampton Town Board will hold a public hearing during its meeting next Thursday evening regarding a proposal to lease property at 400 Pantigo Place in East Hampton to the Southampton Hospital Association, which plans to construct an emergency care facility there. The meeting will begin at 6:30.

The association is a not-for-profit corporation that jointly operates Stony Brook Southampton Hospital with the State University’s Stony Brook University Hospital. The proposed emergency care facility is intended to serve people living east of Southampton Village.

The property lease is to span 50 years at a rate of $20 per year. The association is to hold an option for a 25-year extension and, upon its completion, an additional 24-year extension, for a total of 99 years.

The facility, a freestanding emergency department operated by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, is to be approximately 27,700 square feet, according to Robert Ross, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s vice president of community and government relations. It is to feature seven treatment rooms, a bariatric room, an obstetrics and gynecology room, a laboratory/phlebotomy room, a radiology room with diagnostic imaging including a CT scanner, and a pharmacy. The emergency department will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The facility is expected to cost $38 million, Mr. Ross said. The state granted  $10 million toward its completion, which must be matched through private contributions. It is anticipated that philanthropic contributions will fund the remaining balance, he said.

Two playing fields on the town-owned parcel would be displaced by the facility. The association proposes to allocate up to $1.7 million for the construction of two new lighted baseball fields and associated amenities on property to be provided by the town.

Those wishing to address the board with respect to the proposed lease have been asked to attend the meeting or to address comments to the East Hampton Town Clerk, 159 Pantigo Road, East Hampton 11937. Correspondence should be received before the meeting.
