High Season at Guild Hall
If it is not quite yet the highest of the high season, no one told Guild Hall, which is planning an action-packed week of art and culture leading up to the July 4 holiday weekend.
It begins tomorrow with a party for those on the Garden as Art committee. It is not too late to join the event in a significant contributing capacity. Laura Perrotti at Guild Hall has more information. The party will be at a private residence in the Georgica Association; this year’s theme is toxic-free gardens. Edwina von Gal, the honorary chairwoman of the event, will be the featured guest.
Also tomorrow, at 8 p.m., is “Under the Rock,” a one-man show mixing music, humor, and rock ’n’ roll lore. Corky Laing, the drummer of Mountain, the classic rock band responsible for hits like “Mississippi Queen” and “Nantucket Sleighride,” will lead the audience on a tour of rock history from his own vantage point, with re-enactments of classic concert moments of the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. Kate Mueth is the director of this musical theatrical mash-up. Tickets are $30, $28 for members. A ticket including a chance to meet the talent is $50, $48 for members.
On Saturday, Guild Hall will host its annual members meeting. The Montauk High Notes from the Montauk School will perform, and a continental breakfast will be served, along with a preview of upcoming events. The event, which begins at 10:30 a.m., is free.
At 3 p.m. on Saturday, a free panel discussion led by Robert Storr will be held in conjunction with the new Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies exhibition (see related article). The panel members will include Tina Barney, Lynda Benglis, and Joel Shapiro. An opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. will follow. Then at 8 p.m., Jon Lovitz, a film actor, star of the animated series “The Critic,” and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member, will take the stage for a night of comedy, with Sue Costello as a special guest. Guild Hall has cautioned that the material is for mature audiences only. Tickets begin at $45 for balcony, with discounts for members.
Tovah Feldshuh stars in a staged reading of “Mona Lisa Speaks” by Jenny Lyn Bader, directed by Julie Kramer, on Sunday night at 7:30. In this play, the subject of the masterpiece shares what has been on her mind all these centuries. Tickets start at $30 for balcony, $28 for members.
On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., the Complete Unknowns and a special guest will rock the house. The Bob Dylan tribute band is a regular performer in the area, as reported elsewhere on this page. Tickets are $20, $18 for members, with prime orchestra seating priced at $40.
Next Thursday, “John Leguizamo: Ghetto Klown” will be the comedy offering. The autobiographical one-man play, directed by Fisher Stevens, features stories about Mr. Leguizamo’s upbringing in Queens and his early days as an actor on the sets of films such as Baz Lurhmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge.” Ticket prices begin at $45 for balcony and $43 for members, Unless otherwise noted, free student rush tickets are available for all performances.
