Irene McClain Weidert
Irene McClain Weidert, who grew up in Sag Harbor and lived in Southampton and Lady Lake, Fla., over the years, died at home in Southampton on Jan. 20. She was 85 and had had a long illness.
Mrs. Weidert was a golfer. A member of the Sag Harbor Golf Club, she participated in many tournaments and was proud of having won a trophy in 1948, which her family still displays. In recent years, she had begun painting in oils and doing genealogical research on her ancestors, including Silveys, O’Sheas, McLanes, and McClains. This effort took her to the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and the John Jermain Memorial Library in Sag Harbor.
She was born to William A. McClain and Helen Cusick McClain of Sag Harbor on April 10, 1927. She graduated from St. Andrew’s Elementary School and Pierson High School, both in Sag Harbor. Her husband, John E. Weidert, died in March 2012.
Mrs. Weidert is survived by a brother, Gene McClain of North Haven, and by three sons, Mark McClain of Frederick, Md., David McClain of La Jolla, Calif., and Robert McClain of Palm Springs, Calif.
She is also survived by three granddaughters. A sister, Helen McCrosson, and two brothers, Donald McClain and Robert McClain, died before her.
The family received visitors on Jan. 23 at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor and a Mass of Christian burial was said at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church last Thursday morning. Burial followed at St. Andrew’s Cemetery.
Mrs. Weidert’s family suggested donations in her memory to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach 11978.
