It’s Groundworks @ Hrens Now
On Saturday, under sunny skies and in the warmest weather the South Fork has known in months, crowds descended on two-plus acres of beautifully landscaped grounds to experience a new beginning amid the rebirth of spring.
With a move to the former Jos. A. Hren Nurseries at 530 Montauk Highway, Groundworks Landscaping Inc., founded in 2002 by Linda Silich, Kim Hren, and Andy Silich, has consolidated its business onto one site.
In addition to offering gardening supplies like plants, soil, mulches, and fertilizers, Groundworks @ Hrens, as the site is called, puts a new spin on gardening and landscaping design. As an “outdoor living center,” the business encompasses furniture, pet supplies, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and pond design. Also on site is a gift shop, offering necessities and otherwise for hosts or visiting guests.
The ownership team will also offer workshops, as well as community events such as the haunted Halloween rides and Christmas open-house happenings held at Jos. A. Hren Nurseries in years past.
“I remember every nook and cranny,” said Ms. Hren, whose grandfather founded the nursery in 1939. “It was always fun working here, so it’s nice to see it all come back and everybody get excited about it all over again.”
Groundworks had been based at 7 Toilsome Lane in East Hampton, with a holding yard for plants in Sagaponack. The move, said Ms. Silich, means greater convenience for staff and clients alike. “We’ve had this dream for a few years. We moved in the day after Christmas and got it rolling. It’s all come together in the last three months,” she said.
Ms. Hren is the lead landscape designer. She and Ms. Silich, designer and marketing chief, oversee the entire operation. Mr. Silich, who heads the landscape installation and maintenance divisions, oversees the landscape crew and the scheduling of all jobs.
The crew busily preparing the grounds for Saturday’s opening, Ms. Hren said, have been with Groundworks for many years. “It really is nice to see how happy they are, and that they’re taking pride in what they’re doing.”
