Jitney, Website Breached, Warns Riders to Change Passwords

Riders of the Hampton Jitney who have used its online services are being urged to change the passwords they entered because of a security breach of the company's website.Geoffrey Lynch, the Jitney's president, sent emails to customers early Friday morning informing them that personal information stored with the Jitney had been compromised, but that "no discernible credit-card information was exposed." The breach occurred on Wednesday."In an abundance of caution, you should immediately change the password you use to access the Hampton Jitney and Ambassador websites," Mr. Lynch said in the email, adding that if the same passwords were used at other sites, riders "should take precautions to change the password there as well." Exactly which Jitney customers were notified by email was unclear at press time. The Jitney's website is now functioning securely, he said, and once customers change their passwords, they can make reservations as usual. He also said an investigation was underway and that no further information would be available until it was completed."A comprehensive notice and disclosure of the facts and your rights" would be provided at that time, he said. A call to the Jitney on Friday for comment was directed to Andrew Lynch, the Jitney vice president. He did not immediately return the call.
