Pleased Pachyderms

    Mikelle Terson of Mikelle Design in New York City is launching a contest to help raise money for her Mik-ellephant Sanctuary Fund this fall.

    The jewelry designer, a longtime supporter of multiple wildlife organizations, is using her Happy Elephant necklace as the centerpiece for two fund-raising opportunities.

    First, Ms. Terson will donate $10 for each Happy Elephant purchased from her booth at the Hampton Classic Horse show, and the purchasers’ names will go into a drawing for a special-edition 18-karat gold and diamond edition of the necklace, worth around $2,500.

    Also on Sunday, Ms. Terson will launch a writing competition on “What made the elephant happy?” In one to three pages, contestants are asked to provide a short story, song, or poem to answer the question. The contest is divided into under-18 and over-18, and the winner could get a special-edition gold and diamond Happy Elephant necklace, as well as a signed edition of Nick Brandt’s “On This Earth, A Shadow Falls,” a photography book on African wildlife.

    Details, rules, and entry forms will be available at mikelledesign.com starting on Sunday, with the deadline looming at the beginning of December.

New View on the Hamptons

    Kelli Delaney, a full-time Southampton resident, has recently launched a Web version of a Hamptons social diary, KDHamptons.com, offering “a taste of everything this tony community has to offer, from fashion and beauty features to exclusive coverage of social gatherings,” according to a release.

    Ms. Delaney’s vision is to focus less on the celebrity and more on the local Hamptoner, with Erin Hattrick Meany of Topiaire serving as floral expert, Dr. Mark R. Kot of Southampton Urgent Medical Care as the KDHamptons resident physician, and Dr. Kot’s daughter, Lily, as the KidHampton correspondent. Ms. Delaney intends to update the content year round as opposed to the “somewhat limiting summer season.”

    A sale is going on today at the Southampton Roberta Freymann store at 53 Job’s Lane. Featuring up to 70 percent off on both Roberta Freymann and Roberta Roller Rabbit items, there are also warehouse specials in upscale women’s clothing and accessories.

Award for WVVH

    Greg and Ernie Schimizzi of WVVH Hamptons TV received the “outstanding community leader award” from Valores de la Familia Hispana on Aug. 17 at the Hispanic Network’s second anniversary celebration.

    Valores de la Familia Hispana is an organization whose mission is to help Latinos integrate into American culture, while at the same time keeping them connected to the cultural heritage of their homeland.

    It honored WVVH-TV and its founders for serving as pioneers in bilingual broadcasting and fostering assimilation within the diverse community on Cablevision’s Channel 78 and Fios Channel 14. Hamptons Television will be dedicating blocks of its schedule to Spanish language and bilingual programming in acknowledgement of the burgeoning market share held by Latinos.

    WVVH Hamptons TV is located at East Hampton Studio, 77 Industrial Road, in Wainscott.

Huge Book Sale

    Glenn Horowitz Bookseller will offer a selection of its book inventory at a book sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, at Local 87, at 87 Newtown Lane in East Hampton, will feature books on art, photography, design, architecture, graphic design, interior design, and literature. There are thousands of books, with prices originally in the $100 to $200 range, which will be on sale for $10 to $20. The sale is cash only, and purchases must be taken away by the customer. Artists will be on site, creating artwork as well.

Out of Africa

    Smith River Kitchens at 92 Osborne Lane in East Hampton — a kitchen design and installation company — will host a trunk show on Saturday and Sunday featuring the African sarongs, bags, wraps, and jewelry of Mombasa Drive.

    The show will be held on Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon. The Mombasa Drive collection can be seen on the company’s Web site, mombasadrive.com.

Lisa Perry at Mayfair Rocks

    Lisa Perry, a designer, will hold a pop-up shop showcasing her fall 2011 collection Saturday through Wednesday at Mayfair Rocks in East Hampton. The event will be launched on Saturday evening with an in-store cocktail party, shopping, and live models wearing the collection from 4 to 6 p.m. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Red Ribbon Foundation, which raises money to fight H.I.V./AIDS.

 A Correction

    In a story on Suffolk Bancorp’s late filing last week, this sentence was published: “Suffolk allowed that its second-quarter loan losses would total approximately $49.6 million, or 4.68 percent of net loans. This is a marked increase over last year’s second quarter, when loan losses came in at $20.9 million, or 1.8 percent.”

    To clarify, Suffolk expects that the balance of its allowance for loan losses — which is different than its actual loan losses — at June 30, 2011, will total approximately $49.6 million or 4.68 percent of net loans compared to a balance of $20.9 million or 1.8 percent of net loans at June 30, 2010.
