Klezmer and Tango

At the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor

Temple Adas Israel and Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor will present “Tango, A Story With Jews,” a documentary about the events that brought Jews to Buenos Aires in the 19th century, on Sunday at 7 p.m. at the theater. Argentine refreshments and a cash bar will be available starting at 6.

The film establishes that Jews played a pivotal role in the emergence of tango music, as the distinctly Jewish, made-for-dancing klezmer music fused with Argentine music to create tango as it is known today.

The film includes archival footage dating from 1889, when Jews arrived by ship from Russia, as well as Jewish musicians, past and present, playing klezmer and tango. Tickets will be $12 at the door.
