Latino Film Fest at Parrish
The 12th annual OLA Film Festival, a program of acclaimed Latino films organized by Isabel Sepulveda de Scanlon of the Organizacion Latino-Americana of Eastern Long Island, will take place Friday, Sept. 25, through Sept. 27 at the Parrish Art Museum. For the first time, the program will feature a day of family activities, including performances by the Herencia Calena Latin Dance Company, art projects, and poetry readings, on Sept. 27.
The festival will kick off with a screening of “La Once,” a 2014 film from Chile, on Friday, Sept. 25, at 5:30 p.m. The film focuses on five women who have gathered for tea once a month for 60 years. As they reminisce, their lives are revealed through their personal stories, which have been colored by the historical changes they have experienced.
“La Once” will be followed at 7 p.m. by a performance on the museum’s terrace by Mambo Loco, who blend classic Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican music with “old-school” Latin and Latin jazz. The concert is free for OLA ticket holders.
A program of short films will be presented Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. “Nana,” a five-minute film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, is a portrait of nannies working in Mexico. “Melody” focuses on students in a Chilean youth orchestra who pursue their love of music to escape poverty. “Las Ventanas,” from Cuba, is the story of a craftswoman who, on her 40th birthday, ponders what she wishes she had done with her life.
The festival will conclude on Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. with “Venecia,” a Cuban feature about the lives of three women who work at a beauty salon. On payday, they go shopping for dresses, thereby beginning an unexpected journey into the depths of Havana’s nightlife. “Venecia” was shown at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
Tickets to each film program are $10, free for members, students, and children.
