‘Lend Me a Tenor’ at Bay Street

At the Bay Street Theatre

Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor will launch its 2013 Mainstage season with “Lend Me a Tenor,” a comedy by Ken Ludwig originally produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber on London’s West End in 1986, then on Broadway in 1989. Directed by Don Stephenson, the cast will include Judy Blazer, Scott Cote, Betsy DiLellio, Donna English, Nancy Johnston, Noah Plomgren, Steve Rosen, and Roland Rusinek.

“Lend Me a Tenor” has received nine Tony Award nominations, winning for best actor and best director. Revived on Broadway in 2010, the play was nominated for the Olivier Award as comedy of the year.

Set in 1934, the narrative follows the hijinks of the renowned Il Stupendo as he is accidentally given a double dose of tranquilizers. The episode causes a chain reaction of mistaken identity, double-entendres, and musical mayhem, according to the theater.

The show runs from Tuesday through June 23 at 8 p.m., and ticket prices are $59.50 and $69.50. For the Tuesday performance, a limited amount of “pay what you can” tickets will be available at the box office after 2 p.m.

The season will continue with “The Mystery of Irma Vep” and “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” Subscriptions are available to all three shows starting at $138.

Laugh Fest

Paul Reiser, Paula Poundstone, David Brenner, and Amy Schumer will be among the headliners taking the stage at Bay Street’s Comedy Club this season. The series kicks off on June 3 with Ralphie May, voted one of “10 Comics to Watch” by Variety, and will continue most Monday nights at 8 p.m. through August. Tickets are $62, $69 for members of the theater.

The All Star Comedy Showcase on June 17 will feature several “rising” stand-up comics including the host, Joseph Vecsey. Tickets are $15 in advance and $25 on the day of the event and are available online or at the box office.    D.S.
