Two series take the Long Island Serial Killer case as a launching point

True crime stories continue to fascinate the American public, whether in podcasts like “Serial” and “In the Dark” or on television, where shows such as “Unsolved Mysteries” are staples. This week the focus is on Long Island, with the release of two series that take the Long Island Serial Killer case as a launching point.

On Monday, People magazine premiered its new show “People Magazine Investigates” with two episodes focused on the investigation that followed the discovery of 10 bodies at Gilgo Beach in 2010, some parts of which were found in Manorville as well. The killer or killers may ultimately be connected to another body found in North Sea in 1993. Many of the victims had been working as prostitutes.

On Saturday, the A&E channel will air its first episode in an eight-part miniseries called “The Killing Season.” It starts with the Long Island murders and then weaves in similar unsolved cases from around the country involving sex workers. One of the questions the series poses is whether the profession of the victims has influenced the investigations of their murders.

The first two episodes of “The Killing Season” were shown at the Hamptons International Film Festival in October and were followed by a panel with the creators. It will air on A&E on Saturday at 9 p.m. The first two “People Magazine Investigates” episodes will be rebroadcast on the TLC and Investigation Discovery channels on Sunday at 7 p.m.
