Memorial Day Accident in Montauk Temporarily Closed Highway
Update, 7:45 p.m.: Two people were injured when two cars collided on Montauk Highway in Montauk on Monday afternoon, officials said.
One of the cars appeared to be turning into the west overlook when it was struck by a car heading west on the highway, according to Ed Ecker, the public information officer for the Montauk Fire Department. East Hampton Town police are investigating.
Originally, 4:27 p.m.: A two-car accident by the west overlook in Montauk shut down a portion of Montauk Highway on Monday afternoon, just as Memorial Day visitors began to head west.
At least two people were injured in the crash, which occurred at about 3:50 p.m. Two of the Montauk Fire Department ambulances transported the patients to Southampton Hospital. They were said to be in stable condition. The Amagansett Fire Department stood by with an ambulance at their headquarters in case there was another call in Montauk.
Fire police and traffic control officers rerouted eastbound traffic at Old Montauk Highway, and westbound traffic on Montauk Highway was sent down Beech Street to Old Montauk Highway. The road was reopened just before 4:30 p.m., after tow trucks removed the vehicles.
East Hampton Town police, which responded to the crash, reported the State Parks and Recreation Department would need to make some repairs at the overlook following the accident.
