The Met's 'L'Amour de Loin' to Be Rebroadcast Saturday
An encore screening of Kaija Saariaho’s “L’Amour de Loin,” part of the Met: Live in HD series, will be shown at Guild Hall on Saturday at 1 p.m. The opera, first produced in 2000, is having its Met premiere in Robert Lepage’s new production, which features glimmering ribbons of LED lights that extend across the stage and orchestra pit.
Set in the 12th century, the opera is the story of Clémence, the Countess of Tripoli, Jaufré Rudel, the troubadour seeking his perfect love, and the pilgrim who carries messages back and forth between them from France to Lebanon, a distance represented by the LED lights. Eric Owens and Susanna Phillips star as the long-distance lovers.
Ms. Saariaho, who was born in Finland and has lived in Paris since 1982, is one of the world’s leading contemporary composers. Tickets are $22, $20 for members, and $15 for students.
In conjunction with the current exhibition “Connie Fox and William King: An Artist Couple,” Megan Chaskey, the Sag Harbor poet, musician, teacher, healing practitioner, and Ms. Fox’s daughter, will read from her book “Birdsong Under the Wisdom Tree: Collected Poems, a Book of Hours in the Life of a Poet” on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The book interweaves poems, journal entries, and memoir as Ms. Chaskey traces the development of her sensibility and voice growing up in an artistic family. A book signing will follow the reading, which is free.
