Opera Doubleheader
The Met: Live in HD will present Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci,” one of opera’s most enduring double bills, on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Guild Hall.
Mascagni’s one-act opera, set in a Sicilian village circa 1890, is a story of love and betrayal that ends tragically, as operas so often do. “Pagliacci” consists of two acts and a prologue and is set in the same Sicilian village, but 20 years earlier. Jealousy and murder figure also figure in “Pagliacci,” which concludes with a play within the play in which the actors’ true-life emotions turn comedy into tragedy.
David McVicar directs the new production, which stars Marcelo Alvarez, Eva-Maria Westbroek, and Patricia Racette. Fabio Luisi conducts. Tickets are $22, $20 for members, and $15 for students.
