Richard Mark, 80
Richard I. Mark of East Hollow Road, East Hampton, and New York City died at home in Manhattan on Dec. 17 of congestive heart failure. He was 80.
Mr. Mark had been a tax lawyer and partner, first at KPMG and later at First Manhattan Company, an investment advisory firm, both in New York City.
He was born in Brooklyn on Nov. 21, 1932, to Alexander Mark and the former Sonia Zadanoff, and grew up in Woodridge, N.Y. He graduated from Syracuse University and Harvard Law School, passing the New York bar examination and also becoming a certified public accountant.
Mr. Mark was a sports enthusiast, both watching professional teams and, especially, playing tennis, paddle tennis, and golf, and was a music lover, theater fan, and avid reader.
He was a founding member of the East Hampton Tennis Club and its president for five terms. With friends he often also played at East Hampton Indoor Tennis in Wainscott. He was a member of the Noyac Golf Club and the Harvard Club of New York City.
He traveled extensively with his wife, the former Erika Reider, visiting Europe, North and South Africa, the Caribbean, and Mexico. When not traveling, he spent nearly every weekend in East Hampton, where he had a wide circle of friends, Ms. Mark said. The couple had begun visiting the South Fork in the 1960s, first as renters, then buying a house in Wainscott. In 1976, they built their house in East Hampton Village.
Mr. Mark loved the beach, his wife said, heading to Georgica when it was just the two of them, and to East Hampton’s Main Beach with his grandchildren. He would treat them to things from the snack bar there.
In addition to Ms. Mark, he is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Mark of Northampton, Mass., and Audrey Mark Kantaros of Auburndale, Mass., as well as five grandchildren.
A funeral was held at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home on Dec. 19. He was buried at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in East Hampton.
Memorial donations have been suggested to Visiting Nurse Service of New York, 1250 Broadway, #7, New York City 10001.
