Robert G. Schwartz, 93
Robert Gerson Schwartz of New York City, East Hampton, and Longboat Key, Fla., died of a heart attack in Longboat Key last Thursday, his 93rd birthday. He and his wife, Barbara June Schwartz, who survives, had spent winters in Florida for about eight years.
Mr. Schwartz collected contemporary art, had traveled all over the world, and was an excellent chef who liked to entertain, according to Cornelia and Lawrence Randolph, friends in East Hampton. He also was an enthusiastic surfcaster, an activity he enjoyed tremendously on the East End. He and his wife were married on Dec. 28, 1978, and soon afterward began spending summers here. Mrs. Randolph said he would be “terribly missed.”
He was born in Orange, N.J., on Feb. 2, 1924, to Harry Schwartz and the former Pauline Makowski, and grew up in New York City. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in business, but World War II was underway and he joined the Navy, serving in the South Pacific as an officer for two years.
In addition to his wife, two children survive, John Schwartz of Miami and Linda Ayers of Manhattan. Four grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Mr. Schwartz was a member of the Jewish Center of the Hamptons in East Hampton. A futures trader, he donated to the Nature Conservancy and East End food pantries, among other charities here.
A funeral service was held on Monday at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in Manhattan. He was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.
