Samba to Steely Dan
Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor will kick off the weekend tomorrow night at 8 with “Caliente! Latin Night” and shift into 1970s jazz-rock on Saturday with FM: A Steely Dan Tribute, also at 8 p.m.
“Caliente!” will feature the music of Alfredo and Europa, Mambo Loco, and Marcello-Ludmilla Brazil. Alfredo and Europa reflect the influence of flamenco, jazz, reggae, and rock, with an eclectic style that ranges from European world jazz to a danceable Latin beat.
For more than a decade, Mambo Loco has been performing music of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican origin, with “old school” Latin and Latin jazz having been thrown more recently into the mix. Ludmilla Queiroz Benevides, accompanied by Marcello Pimenta on guitar, specializes in Brazilian bossa nova and samba.
Steely Dan — Donald Fagan and Walter Becker — is known for offbeat, original material that drew on such jazz sources as Duke Ellington and Stan Getz as well as rock ‘n’ roll. The band’s best-known numbers include “Reelin’ in the Years,” “Do It Again,” and “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.”
FM, formerly Stealin’ Dan, is a 12-piece band that has been performing the Steely Dan songbook for almost 20 years. While their covers are note-by-note replications, the group, which includes Tom Bowes as music director and Tom Bowes as lead vocalist, adds its own spin to the material.
Tickets to “Caliente!” are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. For FM: A Steely Dan Tribute, the cost is $30 in advance, $35 on Saturday.
